It sure feels like summer around here lately. With almost more sunshine than rain these days, Cordovans might run the risk of forgetting they live in Cordova!
And what says “summer” more than the 4th of July?! Every summer the Cordova Alaska Chamber of Commerce, hosts an Old Time Fourth of July Celebration on Main Street. Lots of local volunteers and community organizations chip in to make it happen, and it’s always a GREAT time.
Last year, in 45 degree weather and driving rain, folks still came out to enjoy the kelp box races, Copper River Salmon BBQ, Dessert social and members of Cordova Volunteer Fire Department even ran (and sat in) a dunk tank. Now that was a cold dunk! But this year, the weather man says nearly 70 degrees with partly sunny skies! We’ll take it!
You can still enter the 2014 Kelp Box Derby! It’s super fun (although I do recommend a helmet) and you can pick up a Kelp Box from the Chamber to put together your racer. The only other requirements are steering and a brake!
